No throwing of undergarments. (I didn't have time to get a permit for

Despite being male, your post has me puzzle. I'm not sure what you're asking.

How is it you're expecting female anime fans to be different from male anime
fans? What do you mean "impress?"

How am I expecting female anime fans to be different from male anime fans?
Hmm....

My dictionary says 'impress' means make a mark by pressi.. oh wait! not
that one..
*ahem*...
impress: fix or print deeply on the mind; have an influence on; move the
feelings.

Eg.
-His words are strongly impressed on my memory.
-This book did not impress me at all. (ie, I did not think it was
particularly good, useful, interesting, etc.)

Note the 'etc.'

Hey, write whatever you think appropriate! Bring some sunshine to my life!

I've never heard Himikoden's Pure Snow. I'd read so much about how
great it was. Now that I've FINALLY had a chance to listen to it, I don't
think it's *that* great. Then again it might be because of the half-hour
it took to download the complete version. All five minutes of it. I don't
think the MPAA need complain of me doing this on a regular basis. ;)

Besides I spend too much money on shiny, shiny discs... :)
And these last two months I've also had people give me CDs! Notably 3 KMKDM
+1 MDFMK CDs from Ben (ergo the quotes in my sig) and 3 out-of-print Hajime
Mizoguchi CDs from Taka! Woowoowoo! *jumpjumpjump!!* :)

Well, girls are allowed to dig robots, too.

The title interested me, and I, being a female, decided to look into
this post. I must say that the only way this would be a bloodfest is if
I saw any "typical" guy remarks in here, but surprisingly, it seems
that no guy has actually directly answered the question yet... Is that
common among all men? Avoiding what they cannot answer b/c they know
theyll all make the same remark: ("Now why can't it involve throwing
off the undergarments!!?")... Haha, Im surprised at you men...

Honestly, with experience, I have impressed my guy friends by actually
being able to have intellectual conversations about series which are
commonly known as "male series" (shonen? *name flies right over my
head, and I'm not sure if that's right) Also most anime men seem to be
impressed by girls just the same as any other man... Yet, I dont care
for many anime men, I look at most of them and think.. well...
nevermind...

... But that's just an answer coming from a female, whom I bet you
never really cared to have actually looking at this post...

At first glance I thought this might have been a gaza post...

By being female and being into anime. Also, by being attractive. Those
three factors combined are gold. You want more? Okay, by being willing
to watch hentai, since hentai is actually excellent material for
MSTing. Being willing to try shounen shows is also a means for impressing
guys. Kenshin and Gundam Wing are both really drawn out at times, and
neither one of them have the main characters actually hooking up with
their romantic interests (which actually annoys me too, as I really think
Kenshin should be tapping Kaoru's booty), but they both have big female
followings because of all the sexual tension, respectable female
characters, and sexy bishounens who are just dreamy. I'd also be really
impressed if a girl was into Inachu no Ping Pong Club. Anyway, as I am
not in a fluid state of mind at this hour, I'm going to make this awkward
transition and presume that you may be trying to impress a male anime
fan. Just being knowledgeable about a guys favorite show should help a
lot. The best solution, though, is to get your man drunk and say
something sexually suggestive. If that doesn't work, arrange to be alone
with him, paralyze him with ketamine, and have sex with him while he is
paralyzed. Repeat this process on a daily basis until he is your
slave. What's he going to say, that some girl forcibly had her way with
him? His ego will be too overpowering to allow him to seek outside help
in warding off your daily sexual assault, and eventually he will have no
choice but to be your man and your servant. ;)

The latter is subjective. ITYM "by taking care of themselves and not looking

Point of order: being willing to watch hentai as a precursor to sex or as
a sexual outlet in its own right seems to work too. Ditto collecting naughty
doujin; also ditto finding the naughty doujin of your partner's preferred
arrangement (and it helps even more if you both like, say, nekkid Haruka
and Michiru). Not for everyone, but, see, there's a place for that.

It depends... are you looking to get to know the guy or just cause a scene
at a convention? If it's the former, you actually have to be inteligent and
have some sort of personality. If it's the latter, just be non-hideous and wear

Female fans impress male fans... um, how about: "have a pulse"?

It's helps if they're not totally psychotic, but given the present
gender ratios among fandom even that isn't really necessary.

I have. Over on the Fushigi Yuugi mailing list. When I dared to state
that I thought that Nakago was a sociopathic murderer.

Hoo boy, did I catch hell over that.

Which forever burned into my mind one of the great unspoken laws of
anime :

Law of Dermal Innocence : No matter how black the soul of a male anime
character, a pretty body is grounds for ultimate forgiveness and
worship.

Corrollary (Law of Bodacious Tatas) : Massive bosoms are a source of
ultimate forgiveness and worship as well ^_^

It isn't as lopsided as, say, American comic books. There are a good
number of series that are targetted at women and a number more that have
universal appeal.

But the social awkwardness among many of the male fans is a constant among
all types of fandom, hence the widespread thought that it doesn't take
much for a female fan to impress a male on...

 1. Don't *expect* them to have no purpose other than trying to impress
you.

 2. Try to be civil even if you are repulsed - even if it's not at the
male in question. But if a guy isn't a bit offended because you just
told an embarrassing friend of his, "Get away from me, you hideous
creature!" you may want to consider the fact that he may only have a
hormonal interest in you.

 3. Use tact BEFORE heavy arms fire. If a guy makes a boneheaded
assumption - either that you are ignorant of the hobby, or is himself
ignorant about a series you follw - give him a chance to apologize when
you point it out to him by starting tactfully. "You do realize I know
that?" or "I take it you've never seen that series then?" are acceptable
starting places, "You're so full of shit! I can't believe you're such a
loser!" is something else entirely.

 4. Do not treat a convention site as a buffet. Yes, fandom contains a
fair share of desperate men. But if you are trying to make a positive
impression, you should be willing to treat them as human beings who
enjoy the same hobby - and insist (firmly but politely, if it proves
necessary - and I admit it often is) to be treated the same.

 5. Never assume that the petty traits of characters on the screen are
as charming in person. (Yes, I've seen fans make this mistake.)

 6. Part of the trial of any convention is dealing with people who have
been up a little long, are a bit negligent of personal hygiene (at least
during the convention itself), and perhaps a bit overager for attention
or affection. Complaining loudly about it says little for your
character. Stand up to the assholes, yes, but don't be the one creating
the scene.
(Note: I do not consider cold-cocking a guy who grabbed a personal part
of you to be "making a scene", though a loud, "Get your hands off of me,
pervert!" will also suffice, if you aren't inclined or able to deck
him.)

Since men are a diverse breed your globalisations could easily be
seen as sexist. Perhaps it is that many males have realised how
dangerous the process is?

Personally I consider positive virtues of a person to be largely
independant of gender. I consider intellect, a warm spirit and a
touch of innocence (which is hard to protect) to be impressive
attributes in both men and women. Doubtless others will find other
things.

Then again, the `have a pulse' answer was probably deeper :) there's
so many attributes to any individual that trying to specify and rank
them is doomed to fail. Especially since diversity is a valuable thing
too.

While it is doubtless true that certain attributes are more common to
one gender or another, such a realisation doesn't actually mean anything
in relation to any given individual. And the value of discussing it is
open to question.

Generalisations are always inaccurate aren't they? Unfortunately from my
personal experience, sometimes at a convention this one looms too close for
comfort. ("Hallo! You're standing on my foot!" and "Excuse me, my face is up
here," all apply.)

Besides, can't you feel the heart-felt, gut-level (I can't go lower than this
can I, ..Peter? ;) PAIN emanating from that no doubt self-identifying
sentence?

I have to give him credit that he has left this spin-off thread in silence.
Quite dignified.

I'm impressed. :)

One small modification to your proposed question:

How do male anime fans impress females of the human variety?

(Considering that there's not really that many female anime fans,
relatively speaking, plus that additional comment of your below...)

That polite young man, our Mr. Dometita, had brought up this matter very
subtly and catholically in the other thread where the "How Male Anime Fans
can Impress Female Anime Fans" page was mentioned. I chosed only to cover the
more widely prevalent inadequacies for expediency's sake (ie, cos I feel like
;). It is of my personal opinion that most females who want to impress
females are quite attuned to the finer points of directing their admiration.
:)

I take this opportunity to state I have no interest in a parallel list for
the male anime fans. There is already quite a lot of online literature about
males impressing males (whatever the end reasons may be for! ^_^)

Of cos, other concerned anime fans might like to start new threads to address
these issues.. :)

I certainly don't consider the below "wisdom," but some things that
might work for the generalized anime fan...

Use the cheap, politically incorrect lines that a "man's man" would give
to a woman in a bar. Cheesy lines, such as, "I love my phone number...
could I have yours?" work particularly well.

Wear skimpy outfits.

To be able to walk through a gallery WITHOUT swooning over all the
bishounen pictures.

Not turning a face of disgust as a male fan talks about <insert name of
ultra-hentai anime series> as his the best anime series of all time.

Being able to stand more than three minutes next to a male fan with B.O.
distinctly from lack of bathing.

Throwing.... oh, wait...

Darn it.

I can dig on Magical Twilight and the like, but if a guy seems to be a little
*too* into anime about rape, torture, and abuse, that's my cue to say bye-bye.
A whiff of misogyny at first generally means there's a big pot of it in the
kitchen later on.

Ew. If someone lacks the will to perform a basic function such as bathing... I
can't imagine they'd have much in the way of more finely developed courtesy.
Or reason.

I wasn't going to reply to that one....I'm amazed someone took it seriously
and with such good grace.

Sorry, if anyone, male or female, claims that the "best anime of all-time"
is an "ultra-hentai" then they've either got significant problems of person
or taste. As such i'm looking for an escape route about that time. Hentai,
and extreme violence anime, and Go-Nagai `comedies' are all based
on primitive emotions for their power.

And it must be expected that `stating' the belief will be taken as an
indicator of personality. Heck, go to a con (being male) and chase ofter
other males wanting to talk, in detail, about your favourite Yaoi moments
and see how receptive people are.

The biggest shame is that fans of dodgy anime tend to be the most
talkative and the least receptive to hint that they should shut the
hell up now.

(not that this is a personal peeve, oh no, not me, no way)

OK, I'll bite.

*glomping* Nope, not 'not enough', but too much. Whilst guys (especially
in costume) may not mind being glomped the once, and may find it mildly
amusing the second time, he doesn't want to be constantly being followed
by someone he hardly knows. Well, most of the time. And if the guy has a
girlfriend, which helikes, then this sort of attention is unwelcome. So
girls, keep your glomping to a minimum, and if he likes you give him a
name and a contact, or arrange a place to meet later.

Don't dress up as J-pop artists ?:-) The guy doesn't know if he likes you
because he knows you're a girl, or because you look pretty with all that
make up. But, you're cosplaying a *guy*... so there's a conflict of
interests... "I really like her... but is it because she's a girl... or
because she looks like a guy..."

There you go.

It worked well enough for me at CN Anime Expo. Although I did keep the
squealing and flailing to a minimum (for a bishie-obsessed fangirl that
is). Heheh, actually he told me that the kicker for him was that I liked
King of Fighters ^_^

Oh well, I admire men, but I don't claim to know what they're about (I
believe in case by case evaluation anyway). I suspect that the original
question wasn't posed so seriously in the first place.

With an inebriated fangirl you'd probably get an increasing amount of
squealing until she passed out.

Or maybe that's what you're refering to ^_~

Heheh, well, most j-rock guys don't look like guys to begin with. But as
they *are* male (even if it's not outwardly apparent) girls can swoon
over them. This crossdressing thing brings up some interesting
issues...So, you say that a guy liking a girl who was dressed up like a
guy who dressed like a girl would cause him to question his sexuality?
(ahh too many layers, I can't deal with a question like that)

Hey, do you know Mana from Malice Mizer? The guy looks like a perfect
pretty China-doll and I've seen lots of Japanese girls do cosplay of
him. Where does that fall?

Oh well, I dressed up like Camui Gackt (bishounen extrordinaire) at
Shoujocon, and I had a great time. Didn't get any guys...but the girls
seemed happy enough ^_^ Anyway, shoujo is all about weird gender stuff,
so I suppose it was appropriate.

I'm sure the drooling bishoujo-obsessed fanboys could stand to heed the same
advice.
