Hello! :)

How about a non-PC discussion filled with generalisations, inaccuracies and
occasional sublime verity? :)

I was over at rec.music.opera when I came across this:
"... on my side of the side aisle were a young couple. They were
fairly well-dressed for a matinee and seemed to be only a year or two out
of high school. He didn't seem to have much interest in the opera, but he
was sitting through it politely and gracefully. She, on the other hand was
on the edge of her seat the whole time and bubbling over with excitement.
By the end of the show she was practically climbing all over him. Smart
fella."
[excerpt of post from Mark D. Lew]

So, raam'ers.. what are the ways with which male anime fans can impress
female anime fans?

I hope this is not going to be a very short thread!

So....Pretty much a standard Usenet discussion, then?

Not sure, but the best way for a female anime fan to impress a male
anime fan?: BE one. Preferably mecha. And know your trivia.

(Also, btw, the best way to cause a male anime fan to die of shock, but
impressed nonetheless...)

At the risk of pissing off a lot of people, and with the heavy
disclaimer that I personally have never met any women at Cons. (The
atmopshere is just not generally conducive to single females, I'm afraid.)

  1) Bathe regularly.
  2) Wear clothing that does not have holes.
  3) Be able to converse on a subject other than anime. (I.e., if you
happen to like Urotsukidoji don't mention it.)
  4) Pretend like you don't want any, no matter how bad you do. Project
this attitude in what you say and the way you act.
  5) No matter how sexy Ippongi Bang looks, remember that her husband
is nearby... and he's a very skilled kick-boxer. ;]

Threaten to kill them. Many female anime fans swoon when Hiro does this
in Gundam Wing, so they'd probably respond well to it in real life... :)

OK, let's go through the checklist.
>1) Bathe regularly.
I shower.

> 2) Wear clothing that does not have holes.
Sometimes unavoidable, but I never wear anything in public with obvious holes
in it, like a faded silk-screened Ranma 1/2 tee-shirt with holes that reveal
chest hair, like SOME people I could mention. I hate to say it but the man was
a timberwolf!

>3) Be able to converse on a subject other than anime.
Old movies, punk rock and hardcore metal,
geopolitics, firearms, fishing, gourmet cooking...I got it covered. I do not
act shocked when women express interest in mecha or ultraviolent anime or the
Girls with Guns genre. There are women out there for whom some of these are
their favorite things after all.

>4) Pretend like you don't want any, no matter how bad you do. Project
>this attitude in what you say and the way you act.

I try to strike up platonic relationships with the fine happenin' ladies .
Women are mostly impressed by non-desparate otaku who aren't interested in a
quickie. Though it gets kind of hard to not think impure thoughts when some(I
repeat some) of those ladies in costume look rather fetching and I'm not
talking about the hairy hairy man in the tight tight homemade fuku either.

>5) No matter how sexy Ippongi Bang looks, remember that her husband
>is nearby... and he's a very skilled kick-boxer. ;]

I figured with the outfits he wears. You don't get a belt that color by doing
'Sweatin' to the Oldies'.

Fortunately, we don't have problems like at cons much. Though there are times I
wish con security had some GUGES-Ds ala Appleseed handy.
("Keep your voice down and allow other people to enjoy the showing in peace.
There will be no further warnings!")

A-Kon was bitchin' this year I must say. A good con for costumes, great guests
etc. etc. Mr. Campbell was great but I hadn't known Tim Thomerson would be
there. Star of the Trancers films! (The first and three are the best. 2 is
kinda blah and the others are kinda even more blah.)

+There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, where the sea is asleep
and the rivers dream; people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere
there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, and somewhere else the tea is
getting cold.+

Cool! I'll give it a try.

Here are a few lines to use at cons. Keep in mind, however, that these
are all untested (what? you think *I'm* gonna try these?!)

Before you try to talk to her, be sure to do the following:

* If she's being accosted by other fanboys (quite possible), leap
suddenly between them and her. They've crossed the line; you've got
full license to take them down hard :)

* When you slowly turn to ask if she's all right, make sure you stand
near the air conditioner, so your hair has a breeze to blow it around
while you speak.

* Speaking in deep, serious, Akira Kamiya-esque tone of voice, gather
your "ki" and repeat your choice of the following lines:

    1. Excuse me, but were you drawn by Masakazu Katsura?
    2. So, baby, what's your blood type?
    3. This'll make quite a story to tell...and I hope there'll be more
episodes.
    4. They are already dead.
    5. Do you do any voice-acting?
    6. Wait! Lemme guess! Argh! Are you supposed to me Kyoko, Madoka,
or Kiyone? (use only if she's obviously not cosu-playing; vary names
for other hair colors)
    7. Our meeting was fated.
    8. Wow! You've even cuter than Faye Valentine! Oh, you don't know
who she is? Well, Cowboy Bebop starts in the video room at
(hh:mm)...wanna go?

* Finally--if you know how--make your eyeballs pulsate with emotion as
you await her reply.

Congratulations! Your loneliness is at an end!

Or that's what I've heard, anyway ^_-

don't try this at home, kiddies!

I would suggest that guys not wear fukus while trying to pick up females.

Also, try not to quite many hentai anime during discussions (unless she's into
that.)

Don't suggest doing anything with Tentacles.

Which proves, Crowe o' my Heart, you HAVE GOT to come to A-Kon. I was not only

Business as usual then. Righty-o!

Rule numero uno: Do not drool. It's bad manners and very messy.
2. Learn the difference between her eyes and her chest. Look in her eyes
when she's talking to you. This is very impressive.
3. Do your best not to look like an axe murderer. This means leaving the
Scream-mask at home. Yes, we know it's funny...just...don't.
4. Don't try to impress with your encyclopedic recall of every shower scene
in anime. Or your knowledge of all the names (character and seiyuu),
blood types, and family histories of everybody in La Blue Girl.
5. Bathe. Rain falling on you last June doesn't count.

I will think of more. I just went to my first anime con recently and noticed
there were a lot of female anime fans there, almost 1/3 of the people.

Shoujo is the best. None of this giant robot crap for me! (Well, except for

Seriously, I've _never_ in my life had so many attractive women (and men)

It was a blast. Admittedly, not every guy wants to wander around in public

Ack! That reminds me of all those "Your father must have been..."

Do try to impress them with your encylopedic knowledge of bloodtypes and
other Eastern/Western mysticism... Unless you're chasing after the heart of
a devout God-fearer, few girls can resist having their fortunes told...or
their plams read...and then kissed... ^^

Outside of that there's here's a few things I've seen that worked...

1) Offer to help someone with their cosplay... Preferably the female half
of some couple... ^^ A Rei looking for a her Kaoru, A Kaoru looking for her
Kenshin, or (As I saw at A-kon... *_*) a Kenshin looking for his Shishio...
^^ Then role-play... I mean, if it worked in the anime... ^^

2) Admire the her jewelry... (Very easy if she is in cosplay...) Not only is
it a perfect excuse to hold her hand, inspect what's _behind_ that
"enchanting" pendant, and fondle her earlobe but the smart girl will
probably catch on to what you're doing and (We can only hope... ^^;;;)
appreciate your subtlety... ^^

3) Flirt... Few things hurt your chances more than letting her think you're
a "really great friend"... Talking about Shoujo manga is fine but turning
the discussion towards how most of them end...the tension that can create is
priceless... ^^

4) If you're a local offer to show them the local nightlife... A drunken
night clubbing on Sunset Blvd. beats a drunken night watching anime any
day... ^^

5) Point out her cute aspects the entire con and let her to act like an
anime character... Before you go your separate ways tell her you forgot to
mention how beautiful she was... ^^

6) Laugh often...and actually mean it... ^^

Ja.

Honestly?
I donno about that. Call me weird, but the first thing that comes to my mind
when I see a guy who likes shoujo is that something must be wrong with him.
Or he is a wimp or something. [ This is totally subjective and probably
unfair,
and I do try not to think this way, but that _is_ usually my first reaction.]

> Seriously, I've _never_ in my life had so many attractive women (and men)

That's a fact, I agree. [heheheh... I myself find guys who dress in drag
irresistible ... ^_^;; I just have to flirt with them and hug them, but I don't
want them - if you catch my drift.] Did they flirt with you because they wanted _to
flirt_ and you didn't look "threatening" (i.e., aggressive, male enough, etc.),
so they went right ahead, or did they do it because they wanted _you_?

> It was a blast. Admittedly, not every guy wants to wander around in public

Depends on what you are trying to get out of it. If you simply want female
attention (lots of it), this works just fine. If you want something else, then
you need to think of something else, I guess.

I have one piece of advice though: don't listen to what _women_ say about it. They
know nothing about picking up other women (well, most of them, I suppose... ) At
best, you will know what works for that particular person... Even that is not
likely, because most women don't really know what they want...

Umm, maybe it's because I'm not American, but that line would make me
reach for the paper bag rather than pen and paper (to note down the
phone number, silly ^^;)

My best friend (male) loves shoujo and I guess that's one of the reasons
why we're such good friends. He's not a wimp and there's certainly
nothing wrong with him, on the contrary! :-)
I'm usually quite impressed if a male knows and likes shoujo, even more
so if they *genuinely* like shounen ai. I know they're not exactly the
target audience but if they're open-minded enough to watch some then
that's already a biiig bonus in my books!

Other than the other very useful pieces of advice I've read so far
(shower/bathe more than once a year, use deodorant), there are a few
more I could think of:
        - Shave - or if you have to have a beard, keep it neat.
        - Don't stick out your beer gut - if you have one, then don't
wear t-shirts that are too small for you. (Funny that, a lot of men I
know in anime are overweight, not exactly a turn on if you ask me -_-;)
        - Have an interest in things other than anime. And I don't mean
computer games ^^;
        - Watch who you hang out with at cons - you can be drop dead
gorgeous but if you're sticking with people who e.g. never wash their
hair/clothes/themselves, that's bound to rub off on you. And I don't
mean it literally ^_^;
        - Cosplay
        - Have some social skills ^_^

Chocolate? Milka? I have a pile of that in my room....pity I'm female as

stupid, it's like those people who think that all woman who play paintball are

Just why he should do it? It seems to me that impressing a non-anime fan
female with anime is much more interesting, exiting and rewarding. Well, at
least my personal experience shows it. Anyway, anime is much more fun than
all that boring "kare-kano" stuff.
A comment from my friend's wife (both are hardcore otaku) - "We are not a
married couple. We are just two otaku living together". He subtitles
"Macross", she voice-overs "Laputa", he draws doujinshi, she writes fanfics,
he studies animation, she studies Japanese... Cool. But scaary... ;-)

Here are a few:
1. Cosplay a character chicks dig.
Best-case scenario: She thinks, "Wow, I could have my very own Zechs
Merquise" (or Hotohori or Kurama or whoever).
Worst-case scenario: She thinks, "He's no Zechs Merquise" (or Hotohori
or Kurama or whoever).
(So if you can pull it off, it's a _major_ coup, but if you're plug-
ugly or the character just doesn't suit you, don't try.)

2. Tell her she looks like an anime character. Preferably one she at
least vaguely resembles.
Best-case scenario: She is incredibly flattered. (Personally, I am
_such_ a sucker for this one.)
Worst-case scenario: She thinks, "Won't this guy like me for myself?"
Danger zone: She happens to hate the character you're comparing her to,
and is insulted--"I remind you of *C-ko*?! Goodbye." (But then, if she
reminds you of C-ko, why were you trying to impress her in the first
place?)

3. Be knowledgeable about a broad variety of anime.
Best-case scenario: She is impressed and wants to talk to you more.
Worst-case scenario: She knows more about anime than you do, realizes
that you are bullshitting like crazy, and thinks you are a moron.
Danger zone: Don't blather on and on and bore her. The point is to draw
her into conversation. But keep it honest.

4. Pretend you don't watch tentacle hentai.
Best-case scenario: She thinks, "At last, a guy who isn't a pervert."
Worst-case scenario: She thinks, "Liar."
(In any case, avoid that topic like the plague. No good can come of it.)

5. Not to beat a point into the ground here, but you know how come
Keiichi Morisato was always surrounded by hot babes? Hm? He bathed
regularly!!! Cleanliness is next to godliness, folks.

...and obviously, with female anime fans, some of the same things that
attract normal women work, too, like a sense of humor, conversational
skills, human decency, a well-rounded personality, a good haircut, and
just plain ol' compatibility.
But it's more fun to talk about the otaku stuff.

So in this case it's cleanliness is next to goddessliness... or
goddess is next to his cleanliness... Since his desires are repressed
and to Peorth he won't confess, nor will his love for Bell he profess
or express - meaning their relationship won't progress - an obsessed
goddess in undress leads to his cleanliness...

... Least she doesn't use a steel brush for scrubbing like Zelgadis...

But I digress, leave this mess, and proceeed to the egress.

Where this came from is anyone's guess, and I doube that it will impress.

Karnoven was fairly well behaved at that one, compared with his
distruptive and fanatic rants against Robotech and Antonia Levy at the
'97 "History of Anime Fandom" Panel. Though his anecodes about his
mastery of the Japanese adult store scene as it related to buying a sailor

Plus CPM showed the opening of Utena there, which inspired me to pick up
the series when it came out.

Say, we should work out some "RAAM At SDCC" get-togethers, like they do on

Acturely, the story I heard here was that this guy was originally dressed
as Carrot Glaces and his female friend was dressed as Chocolat. The
suspenders version. The cosplay judges obviously balked at that much
breastage being shown, so the two of them merely switched outfits, and
that took care of that. Pretty clever, I think.

No matter how good the advice is, it has one big problem: you have to
_find_ female anime fans first.

How to impress female anime fans:

1. Occasionally talk about something other than anime. Like, say, Steinbeck's
novels, or oil barons' controlling interests in US government, or something
silly like that.
2. Don't tell her about your restraining order.
3. Or your collection of Idol Angel Welcome Yohko hentai dojin.
4. (YMMV) Be able to appreciate a fine, fine frosty full of Celis.

Of course, here the UK wins for once -- although I don't think that many
females bothered turning up for NomiCon, one of whose attractions was
the real ale...

Heh heh, could be worse, you could have the problem guys at our local anime
club have-- we have some girls, only problem is, they're all *quite* underage.
^_^ Since most of the guys are over the age of consent, it's become something
of a running joke whenever any of them meet a girl at the meeting:

Random Guy at SAAS: "I met a new girl!"

Me: "Cool! How old is she?"

Random Guy: "Um..... I better ask...." (wanders off in the direction of the
girl.... only to wander back looking sad...)

This happens with alarming regularity. I feel kind of sorry for them, since our
meeting's girl population consists of me (too old for everyone, and in a
long-term relationship) and then a bunch of girls under the age of 18. Girls I
keep a sharp eagle eye on, since the last thing the club would need would be an
angry dad pissed that a bunch of older men were macking on his daughter.

<< Hmm according to a handy online chart the age of consent in Texas is 17,

Age of consent may be 17, but believe you me, I wouldn't want to face down a
17-year-old girl's redneck dad toting a shotgun. ^_~ Of course, redneck dads
would probably tote shotguns for their daughters over the age of consent as
well.

And, sadly, they were hitting on girls under the 16 year old mark. None of the
12-year-olds actually got hit on, but the 13 to 15 range certainly did. @_@ I
will say, most of them didn't LOOK 13-15 years old, but it's still alarming.
(And fortunately, most of the guys backed off immediately upon learning the
real ages of the girls in question. Sure, they treat them extra nice, but they
stopped hitting on them or considering them actual dating material.)

Works the other way too, but there aren't any legal considerations in
that case...

I ran into a girl in a coffee shop a while back that I could have
sworn was no older than 13 - and as it turned out she was 21. Must
have had the same problem as Lina inverse ^_^;

Some 12-year-olds ARE old enough to LOOK old enough, if you take my
meaning... not all by any means, though...

I don't see how it's alarming as long as they realize it's 'look but don't
touch'. Once they find out, of course.

There's two age threshholds. Too young to hit on (or to hit on with
_intent_, anyway), and too young to even look at. The former is 18
in most of North America; the latter varies wildly depending on both
parties.

Heh, well if you want female fans just get on down to Shoujocon (or
Yaoicon if you *really* want to get taken for a ride).

Temple University's anime club (http://astro.temple.edu/~brett/) is more
than 50% female. So far I've dated two girls from the club over the course
of the past year. ^_^
