A quick cartoon done on my sun-porch among the tomato plants. The spider is a Halloween item. The female figure is a "Brandy" doll head on an I-Girl "Sahara" body.
|
|
A quick photo composite. The figure is an "Ultra" Max Steel body with an Action Man fuzz-head. That's a Darth Maul speeder-bike. The background picture I took in Depoe Bay, Oregon. That's a Coast Guard motor lifeboat in the surf just outside the harbor entrance, only yards from a cliff full of jagged rocks. I think they were just practicing, but they could have been attempting a rescue for all I could tell. Those guys have guts!

It rarely snows on the Oregon coast, so when we got a few inches this winter (2002) I grabbed my Ultra Corps snowmobile for a few shots before it melted. The figure is a Hasbro CC body with the head from an "Inspector Gadget" McDonald's toy. The "hill" that the snowmobile is on is actually the roof of our 2001 TDI New Beetle.

This is a custom "Cleopatra" doll that my wife Chris made to cheer up a sick friend. The body is a "better articulated" Barbie with a custom painted I-Girl "Sahara" head. Chris made the costume based on a Barbie pattern, and did the beadwork. The doll, with stand, fits inside the Lego container to the right.

Another angle on Cleopatra.

A parody magazine cover based on "Aviation Week & Space Technology," or as it's often known to insiders, "Aviation Leak," or just "AvLeak" for short.

An early kitbashed custom of a WWII WASP (Woman's Army Service Pilot) I did for my wife. The uniform is mostly Hasbro from a Tuskeegee pilot (some of the gear has been upgraded since this shot was taken) on a Jakks Cameron Diaz doll. The uniform is a bit oversized, but WASPs wore what was available, often oversized men's flight suits and jackets. The WASPs flew all kinds of military aircraft, from trainers to B-29s. They ferried aircraft, towed gunnery targets, and did test flights. Though they weren't allowed into combat, many were killed in the line of duty. They were not officially recognized by the DoD until the 70s. The official WASP patch, recreated on the base of her stand, was designed by Walt Disney.

We live in a small, tourist town on the Oregon coast. Many of the full time residents work in the service industries, which are very seasonal. Winters are hard on them, and especially on their families. Knowing this, Chris and I have taken on the Fire Department's annual holiday toy drive as our pet charity. We shop all year for quality toys on sale, and stick them away for the drive. Our goal is to find good toys that might delight and inspire a kid whose life my otherwise be very grim. We avoid trendy toys, things that take up lots of space to use (many lived jammed into small apartments), or use batteries that have to be replaced. Classic toys like Tonka, Hot Wheels, and of course, 1/6th figures like GI Joe, Max Steel, and Ultra Corps figure into our strategy. We also buy a lot of firefighter related toys. Anyway, here's last year's haul, in our living room, and filling the back of our New Beetle.

Another photo composite, featuring a fashion doll speedboat I repainted and customized for Adventure Team use. The mutant fish is a Star Wars Episode One toy.

An actual outdoor shot of the AT speedboat. Unfortunately, if you look closely, you'll see that the boat is busy filling up with water! Turns out that the boat wasn't very sea-worthy. I've since added AT graphics to the boat, and filled every available space inside the hull with foam. The boat is now unsinkable, but it STILL fills about half-way with water. To paraphrase Barbie, "Nautical engineering is hard!"

You may reconize this composite shot from the "AvLeak" cover earlier, but it's too pretty not to show in all its glory. The Max Steel jet is piloted by a Joe wearing a Hasbro Shuttle astronaut space-suit. Since virtually this same suit has been used by all US high altitude pilots (flying such aircraft is the U-2 and SR-71 spyplane, and experimental rocket planes like the X-15) it seemed appropriate, and lends a touch of realism to the cool but toy-like Max jet. That's, of course, an actual NASA photo of the Earth from space in the background.

|
Another photo-composite inset from the "AvLeak" cover, this one with a "James Bond" flavor. The jet-pack came with the Max Steel MX-48 sports-car. The figure is a CC-Joe. The helmet is cut from a KFC "Episode One" kids-meal toy. The backdrop is an old shot of the Boston skyline that I scanned in.

Yet another photo-composite used (minus text) on the "AvLeak" cover. Bet you didn't know they ever made an Adventure Team carrier? Well, I never saw one either. It must have been a "Sears Wishbook" exclusive. Note my "AT Avenger Pursuit Craft" getting in trouble.

I couldn't leave well enough alone when it came to aircraft carriers.

Me and BBi's "Richard Marcinko" action figure: seperated at birth? I'm looking for a nude figure I can use to kitbash a "mini-me." Can anyone help? Now? Or I will be forced to hurt you...

|
Okay, I admit it. I normally wear glasses, generally lack the fierce expression, and am about as dangerous as a teddy bear. Never mind. I want that Richard action figure...

Here's a historic Joe photo. In the foreground is the Hasbro Navy Gunner, featuring the twin-mount 40mm anti-aircraft gun. In the background is my father-in-law, Jerry Fifield, who, as an underaged WWII volunteer, served in the Naval Armed Guard. This obscure but dangerous branch of the U.S. Navy was assigned to defend freighters and tankers transporting war materials all over the world. In fact, though he trained briefly on a quad-mount 40mm, he generally never served on a ship with guns that big, and was expected to fend off Japanese submarines with nothing more than a machine-gun! We presented this to him in honor of his 75th birthday.

This is a retouched action-photo featuring a highly modified Barbie. The head is from a "Vitamin C" doll, and the body is one of the "better articulated" Barbies that has ball-jointed hips, and bending elbows and knees, as well as flat feet. To this I added a part of "Action Jackson" hands, and ankle joints made from RC airplane control-surface hinges. She's a little fragile, but otherwise, not a bad female figure.

Another one of my early kitbashes, "Captain Retro," a space hero inspired by Republic serials, Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, and pulp sci-fi magazine covers. The suit and body armor (repainted silver) are Max Steel. Helmet (again, repainted silver, and with a straight-pin "antenna" added to one earpiece) is Hasbro WWII issue. Rifle is from my junk box, probably from a toy robot of some sort. The gun belt is SOTW, and the pistol is from a Power Rangers figure. The brass "Saturn" on his chest is a charm I found in a craft store.

This was my first custom 1/6th vehicle. I started with a very pink, fashion doll "Rolls" convertable. I disassembled it, painted the pan and interior gray, and the body bright red. I retouched the chrome with silver paint. Then I made a custom gearshift with wooden knob, and made floor, hat-shelf, and trunk mats from craft foam. The stock wheels were replaced with "street racer" tires salvaged from a "Little Tikes" toy car. The trunk opens, and there's a tool-box and spare tire in there. I had a ball doing the conversion, and it got me hooked on 1/6th vehicle customs.
