DIRECT FIRE IGNITION SYSTEM
Twin Coil (wasted spark) Setup -- GT-Four With Autronic EMS
Note: This setup will not work on a Celica GT-Four (All-Trac) that is using a standard ECU.
All the information provided here is relative to a twin coil (wasted spark) ignition setup for vehicles using an Autronic SMC or SM2 engine management system.

Parts You Will Need

The coil packs are part number MD179787 (at least that's what's on the box), and are a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution I, II, and III part. So maybe a Mistubishi dealer should have them or be able to get them. They would probably have been used on the Turbo Eclipses.

Another Bosch Ignition Module (Part No. 1 227 022 008) and a connector for the module are needed to trigger Coil 2.

In order to get a tachometer feed, a Tacho Module will have to be purchased from Robert Jansoon of MRM-Racing in Sweden. His e-mail address is robert@cija.se

The SMC doesn't always come with spare wires, so if all of the outputs are already in use, it will be necessary to get extra terminals from the Autronic dealer the unit was purchased from.

Software Setup

There is only one change that has to be made in the software. After completion of the installation, connect a laptop to the ECU, and switch the ignition on (don't start the engine). Start up your Autronic software, and go "online". Select "M0" and then select "Engine setup". Change the parameter "Coil Ignition System" from 1 to 2, save the file, and lock into the ECU. That's it, the car should now be able to start. If using the older software (eg. Version 1.18), select "Mode Flags 0 - 7", and whatever number is in Mode Flag, just add 1 to it. For example if the number is 81 (which a GT-Four would be), just change the number to 82, save the new file, and lock into the ECU.
