Plane Madness

Plane Madness

This is a very good podcast and blog by Capt’n Chris, a FAR certified Part 121 Airline Transport rated Airline Captain.  With a slightly twisted slant he brings you interesting news, things going-on in aviation, thought-provoking editorials, and a worthy rant here and there:  "In a nutshell I’m just a flyer trying to make a living while still trying to enjoy what I do!  So by coming here you get my rant and raves and all things aviation related (and some not) and everything else in between."  Airline enthusiasts will find a lot of good content here, and Plane Madness just might float to the top of your aviation podcast list!

Flying Today (As a New Private Pilot)

06/29/2008 08:49 PM
Sorry to be out of touch. It is funny how I was building up to this grand finale of getting my Private Pilot License and then I put a video saying I passed it but I never put any text on the blog that I passed the checkride.....so....I PASSED THE CHECKRIDE!!!! YIPPEEE!!!

I have been able to fly every weekend this month, but I was not shooting any video. Today I took up my friend Jason, and he took some pictures and we got some video so I will get out a podcast soon. On another note, I got a chance to talk to a student pilot this evening who has a podcast that you should check out. His name is Bill Williams and he is the host of The Student Pilot Cast. He has a few audio podcasts as well as a couple of video podcasts. Bill had emailed me right after my checkride, but I finally got around to actually talking to him last night and today. Be on the lookout for a podcast with the 2 of us. We have been bouncing some ideas off each other for future podcasts. Be sure to check out his blog here.

Aside from flying the norm, I got a chance to fly in a 2007 Cirrus SR22 G3 Turbo. A friend of my instructors took me up as a treat for passing the checkride. Can you say...nice? Can you say...AC?

I am stuck on editing the Seneca flight, because I have not had time to put music to it. Hopefully, I will be able to post something after the checkride.

In Case You Thought It Would Change Anytime Soon

06/26/2008 11:43 AM
Today’s Chicago Tribune gave front page coverage to a US Department of Transportation consumer forum on air travel. The story’s title, You Are Now Free To Take A Flying Leap, says it all. The reporter’s conclusion is disheartening realistic — “airline passengers received an unapologetic warning at the forum that customer service will [...]

Channel 9 - Trans Atlantic, OpenSkies and the premium market

Thomas Lang is an interesting person to enter the fray in analyzing the airline industry. He started out as a journalist, spent time at the lamented eos in marketing and revenue management and is now heading off to do an MBA. Tom has a good view on OpenSkies, the Trans Atlantic market and listening to him you get to figure out why some of the earlier attempts at offering premium service in this market might not have worked. You should check out his website to stay abreast of his industry musings. In the podcast we discussed OpenSkies offering the only flatbed between New York and Paris. Tom would like to clarify that they offer the only flatbed in business class.

Meet Aviation Partners' CEO Joe Clark

06/25/2008 11:23 AM
itunes pic
From the moment he starts speaking, you immediately pick up Joe Clark's infectious love for the business. He tells us how he got started in the winglet business, how Southwest really turned the industry on to their solutions and where they are going next - spiroids (a new word we need to learn), the coming plans for the 777 and the fact he can't talk about working with Airbus - but he shares his thoughts on how neat an A380 with winglets might be. Joe Clark may be the only person outside the oil industry who likes high fuel prices. These reaffirm the value of winglets which can now be amortized in two years.

Betty in the Sky with a Suitcase!

45 A Priest a Archaeologist and an Appalachian!

06/04/2008 11:32 AM

Episode 45

A Priest, a Archaeologist and a Appalachian go into a bar....it sounds like a joke doesn't it?  Well its actually the people I have  managed to offend the most while doing this podcast.

I really try not to offend people but sometimes funny stories are offensive to "someone".

This episode is full of stories about bodily funtions on the airplane.  Some of the anecdotes are slighty offensive so I apologize in advance especially to any Priests, Archaeologists or Appalachians!

44 Strange Bedfellows

05/02/2008 02:46 PM

Episode 44

Last week I was on the BBC world service it was such an absurd lead in...it went something like this...A woman in the Congo was raped and forced to kill her own baby and then we hear from Betty who doesn't want to let mobile phones be used inflight?!

Talk about strange bedfellows!  This show is all about things that just don't go together.  We hear stories about cooking while sleeping, volunteer snorkeling and barf to go.

Along with stories about things you really don't want to put together...like the huge fat person and the empty airplane seat...next to you!

At the end of the episode I play the whole BBC interview!

What's a Podcast?

From Wikipedia:

"Podcasting" is a web-based broadcast medium. Audio files (most commonly in MP3 format) are made available online in a way that allows software to automatically detect the availability of new files (generally via RSS), and download the files for listening at the user's convenience.

The word "podcasting" is a portmanteau of the words iPod and broadcasting. A podcast is like an audio magazine subscription: a subscriber receives regular audio programs delivered via the internet, and can listen to them at their leisure.

Podcasts differ from traditional internet audio in two important ways. In the past, listeners have had to either tune in to web radio on a schedule, or they have had to search for and download individual files from webpages. Podcasts are much easier to get. They can be listened to at any time because a copy is on the listener's computer or portable music player (hence the "pod" in "podcasting"), and they are automatically delivered to subscribers, so no active downloading is required.

Podcasting is functionally similar to the use of timeshift-capable digital video recorders (DVRs), such as TiVo, which let users record and store television programs for later viewing.
