China's high speed trains threaten its airlines

11/05/2009 11:59 AM
itunes pic
Today a thought piece was published by David Bentley, a principal with BigPondAviation.com. Southern Airlines? Chairman, Si Xianmin, warned that emerging competition from China's expanding high-speed rail network is a ?major challenge? for China's airlines. Mr Xianmin stated competition from high-speed trains is "already visible" and costing China Southern, Air China, China Eastern and other carriers market share on major routes where high-speed service is also available. According to Mr. Xianmin, traffic may fall by more than half on 518 of the carrier?s weekly services, while 38 of its 160 domestic routes will compete directly with high-speed railway lines. This is amazing, since China is still developing and its airline industry is in early growth phase. To see such a rapid impact from high speed rail is unprecedented.

Boeing chooses South Carolina; blame game is on

10/29/2009 02:41 PM
itunes pic

The decision was much anticipated but still came as a shock - Boeing's unions are angrier, and they were angry to start with. Jon Talton, Economy Columnist at The Seattle Times and Jon Ostrower from FlightGlobal are Boeing watchers and share their views of this news. The "blame game" has started and there is enough to share. Management at Boeing has to accept responsibility here but clearly the unions also helped to create the situation. Even the politicians in Washington state could have performed better.

Social media jitters?

She even encourages people to make mistakes because there are no other schools to go to but the school of hard knocks. So no matter how big your firm, just give it a try.

56 McGyverAir

08/15/2009 05:32 PM

Episode 56

Do you guys remember the TV Show from the 80's called McGyver?  It was about a guy that could make anything out of the most obscure items.  Well on the airplane sometimes we have to solve a problem with the limited items we have onboard.  We have to pull a McGyver!

So this show features some McGyver stories along with two ejection stories.  Because sometimes a McGyver story is impressive but there is nothing as amazing as ejecting out of an airplane and surviving!

Marathon Key Trip on YouTube

07/04/2009 06:41 AM
I have posted a short video on YouTube for the Marathon Key flight. The trip was great. We filed IFR both ways so I was able to get in the clouds a little bit....more like "around" for the most part, but it was fun and further justifies my need for an instrument rating. Flying around the storms was truly a sight to see and seeing the tops of rainbows was interesting. Be sure to subscribe to the Student Pilot Journal YouTube channel. Occasionally I will be posting quick blurbs that may not be good enough for a full podcast. Here is the video on YouTube:

Student Pilot Journal Podcast #25

06/22/2009 07:05 AM
Status Update:

Hello everyone! A quick status update of what is going on. I am getting ready for my trip to marathon key this Friday. I am hoping that the weather does not put it on hold so we are crossing our fingers. This will be good for me since I have not been able to fly much lately. After this trip I can add one more place to go for the wife and fam. I generally like to fly there first so I don't have any surprises when my wife is flying with me. I know some of you may say that is part of the fun....but....yea....not for me. :-)

Student Pilot Journal in Flight Training Magazine

06/18/2009 06:13 AM
Thanks to my instructor, Casey Allen, Student Pilot Journal was mentioned in the latest edition of Flight Training Magazine. A few weeks back Casey sent an email to the magazine and we were both surprised to see it made it in. To summarize, it mentions how I documented my flight training for my PPL with Video and Audio. Thanks Casey!

On another note, I will be flying to the Keys at the end of the month (Marathon) with a few friends. I asked Casey to ride along since I have never flown there. He has been down there several times. I plan to take some video as well. I still have a number of flights in the queue waiting to be edited but work has been non stop since the beginning of the year and my workflow was interrupted when I switched to the Mac. In the end I know that it will be easier but I am still getting used to working in a new video editing program. I still have not started much of anything on the instrument training so when that gets rolling, you should start to see a lot of video uploaded. I have decided that I want to have everything in line to do non stop training, just as I did for my PPL. That seems to work best for me. Talk to you all later!

-Greg

Hello again SPC listeners.  Today’s episode takes us on a solo training flight on a very busy day to practice performance landings and takeoffs (shorts and softs).  We have everything from FOD to go-arounds in this episode, so enjoy.

I was nearing the end of stage III in my training, so I was almost in the home stretch.  I also explain in this episode the cramming of flights I had to do over just a few days to finish stage III.  This flight was the first of them.

As mentioned, If you are thinking about learning to fly, check out Air Freddy’s Learning to Fly Guide, an e-book that will answer many of your questions beforehand, and do it in an entertaining way.

Lastly, don’t forget to go check out the newly released (out of beta) myTransponder.  This aviation oriented social networking site is great.  To commemorate the recent full release and the fact that it is now open to anyone to join, I’ve created a group on myTransponder called, “Fans of the Student Pilot Cast.”  Please head over to the site and sign up if you haven’t already, and by all means, join my new group!

Thanks again for listening, and enjoy the episode.  Then, get out and fly!

What's a Podcast?

From Wikipedia:

"Podcasting" is a web-based broadcast medium. Audio files (most commonly in MP3 format) are made available online in a way that allows software to automatically detect the availability of new files (generally via RSS), and download the files for listening at the user's convenience.

The word "podcasting" is a portmanteau of the words iPod and broadcasting. A podcast is like an audio magazine subscription: a subscriber receives regular audio programs delivered via the internet, and can listen to them at their leisure.

Podcasts differ from traditional internet audio in two important ways. In the past, listeners have had to either tune in to web radio on a schedule, or they have had to search for and download individual files from webpages. Podcasts are much easier to get. They can be listened to at any time because a copy is on the listener's computer or portable music player (hence the "pod" in "podcasting"), and they are automatically delivered to subscribers, so no active downloading is required.

Podcasting is functionally similar to the use of timeshift-capable digital video recorders (DVRs), such as TiVo, which let users record and store television programs for later viewing.
