What's a Newsgroup?
A newsgroup really a discussion group containing messages posted by people all over the world. They are like the Web-based forums that are common today, but they preceed forums historically and use an entirely different technology. Newsgroups are traditionaly read with newsreader software, but today they can be read with Web browsers as well. For more on this, see the Wikipedia Newsgroup article.

- rec.aviation.aerobatics An unmoderated USENET newsgroup dedicated to discussions about flying in unusual attitudes. Posts to this newsgroup should be about any flying that is outside the range of the standards of the Private Pilots License. This includes competition aerobatics and air-show flying as well as handling unintentional unusual attitudes during emergencies. Particular emphasis should be placed on discussing the safety aspects of such maneuvers. Other topics are discussions about the capabilities of different airplanes for aerobatics maneuvers and their inherent limitations. - rec.aviation.announce Dissemination of events of interest to the rec.aviation community, including fly-outs, airshows, museum events, safety seminars, conventions, races, rec.aviation administrative issues etc. The group will be moderated to minimize volume.
- rec.aviation.answers Periodic postings of information related to aviation; a "super-frequently-asked- questions" organized by subject. Postings will be repeated on a time-cycle basis. Multiple editors will volunteer for different subject areas. rec.aviation.answers FAQ available.
- rec.aviation.balloon The newsgroup will be open to the discussion of all topics related to ballooning such as: operation, safety and maintenance; related equipment and accessories; weather; groups and associations; flying events; flying sites; and other LTA subjects. Private for-sale posts not more than one per month from one sender or about the same items. Short posts giving URLs of binary file locations are permitted. Short posts giving the URLs of commercial sites are permitted once per month. Not allowed: Off-topic threads, UCE (spam), commercial advertisements, binary files, blatently offensive language, pornographic or lewd materials.

- rec.aviation.ifr Articles related to flight under Instrument Flight Rules. Regulatory questions, communications, procedures, charts, training methods, maintaining proficiency, recurrent training, instruments and equipment, questions, and experiences.
- rec.aviation.marketplace Rec.aviation.marketplace is an open forum for parties wanting or selling aircraft, parts, components, service and related items. No off-topic advertising, either commercial or otherwise will be encouraged.
- rec.aviation.military FAQ available, as well as a Russian Aviation FAQ based on questions that appeared in rec.aviation.military.
- rec.aviation.military.naval The purpose of this newsgroup is to facilitate open discussion about all issues relating to Naval Aviation. It will provide a global forum for pilots, naval flight officers, flight crew members, aircraft maintenance personnel, air traffic controllers, flight deck personnel, other support personnel, and others interested in Naval Aviation. The discussions will be based upon flight training, squadron history, aircraft carrier operations, patrol missions, lighter-than-air operations, combat experiences, tower/GCA/CATCC experiences, and other subjects relating to and about Naval Aviation. The goal of these discussions is to provide a global community access to discuss issues relating to Naval Aviation and foster interest in others regarding this unique aspect of aviation.
- rec.aviation.misc In case there are things which didn't get "caught" by the other groups, rec.aviation.misc provides a home for these other topics. An example would be posts on commercial airliners and ultralights which, for the moment, do not have their own home.
- rec.aviation.owning Information on owning airplanes: selection, purchasing, maintenance, insurance, operating costs, operating hints and tips, avionics, parts sources and availability, costs, etc.
- rec.aviation.piloting Information pertinent to pilots of general aviation aircraft which would not fall into one of the other non-misc rec.aviation groups. Topics include, but are not limited to flying skills, interesting sights, destinations, flight characteristics of aircraft, unusual situations, handling emergencies, working with air traffic control, international flights, customs and immigration, experiences with ground support facilities, etc.
- rec.aviation.powerchutes An unmoderated USENET newsgroup dedicated to discussions about flying powered parachutes of all kinds. Posts to this newsgroup should be about any flying of powered parachutes and powered para-gliders. This includes training, safety and competitions using powered parachutes, as well as handling emergencies. Particular emphasis should be placed on discussing the safety aspects of the sport. Other topics are discussions about the capabilities of different powered parachutes and their inherent limitations. It should include schedules of fly-ins, meets and competitions, and their results.
- rec.aviation.products Questions, descriptions, and reviews of products useful to pilots, such as headsets, intercoms, handhelds, flight bags, flashlights, computers, timers, mail-order firms, etc. In general, ".products" is for things which a renter might buy; things which are primarily of interest to aircraft owners should be posted to rec.aviation.owning.

- rec.aviation.restoration A forum for debate and discussion on all topics associated with all forms of aircraft restoration. It allows contact and debate between all individuals directly involved in all aspects of restoration of civil or military aircraft both past and present as well as those with a passing interest historians, model makers, etc.) to remain informed of what projects are currently being undertaken as well as those that are in the pipeline.
General topics include and enable the search for specialist aviation related restoration services and spare parts, the supplying of up to date information on current projects and allow debate and discussion on these projects and their merits. It gives those undertaking restoration a place for requesting historical details and information on specific aircraft types, service histories and records or contacting service personnel who were originally involved with a specific type. - rec.aviation.rotorcraft A forum for discussion of all types of rotary wing aircraft such as but not limited to helicopters (piston, turbine, etc...), autogyros, gyrocopters, and ospreys. In addition, it provides a forum for the discussion of topics specifically related to rotary wing aircraft such as airworthiness directives, regulatory mandates, helicopter industry news, and flight training centers.
- rec.aviation.simulators Flight simulation, particularly discussions of computer-based simulators ranging from PC's to workstations. rec.aviation.simulators FAQ available.
- rec.aviation.soaring Soaring: equipment, maintenance, instruments, safety, training, soaring sites, current events, FAI badge rules and class definitions, meteorology, history, homebuilts, vintage sailplanes, the science and technology of motorless flight, etc. rec.aviation.soaring bibliography and Safety FAQ available.
- rec.aviation.stories A home for one of the greatest strengths of rec.aviation -- longer postings of stories and experiences, including descriptions of cross-country trips, "I learned about flying from that", airshow reports, and so on. The moderator will reject shorter articles and subjects which aren't appropriate to the group, and will ensure that articles meet minimum readability standards (i.e., line lengths). Follow-ups will be directed to other groups. It is expected that this group will typically contain only one or two articles a week. Articles for anonymous posting will be accepted.
- rec.aviation.student It's been said that every good pilot is a student pilot -- for life. This group is dedicated to learning experiences and questions, particularly (but not exclusively) by and for those who haven't yet attained the private pilot certificate. Written exams, solo flights, learning to land, maneuvers, flight tests, instructors and instructional techniques, etc.
- rec.aviation.ultralight This newsgroup is for discussion of all topics relating to the operation, construction and maintainance of ultralight and microlight aircraft, powered hang-gliders, powered parachutes, etc. Discussion of fixed wing or non-fixed wing ultralight aircraft is encouraged as well as light aircraft that are not FAR 103 compliant.

- uk.rec.aviation A newsgroup for the discussion of recreational aviation subjects in the UK. This includes recreational flying of all types (fixed-wing, rotary-wing, microlights, powered and gliders), ballooning, parachuting, homebuilt aircraft, private pilot training, aviation memorabilia, airshows and aviation history. Commercial advertising is not permitted. Short announcements of NEW products or services directly related to the subject of the group is allowed. Private advertisements for aircraft, group shares, parts, memorabilia etc are encouraged as are announcements of air-shows, fly-ins and similar events. Binaries are not allowed although URLs for ftp and Web data and pointers to relevant information in the specialist binary newsgroups are permitted.
