In Memory Of Chase (the Eubalubus)
April 15,1990 - August 17,2001
"Cut the leash that holds me here,
Dear friend, and let me run,
Once more a strong and steady dog,
My pain and struggle done."
On her 10th birthday (4-15-2000) I wrote an email to the senior dog list to celebrate Chase's birthday, it sums up all that Chase meant to me:
"6 years ago I didn't think I'd be celebrating this birthday with my wonderful dalmatian girl Eubus (pronounced U-Bus)...the vet had sat me down and explained that there was nothing else he could do for her. She'd started a week earlier with bloody diarrhea and vomiting, jaundiced and refusing to eat and the only thing they knew was that it was the liver. He'd never had a dog survive with such high numbers on the tests he was running. I didn't care...I took the emaciated Eubus out of her kennel in the vet...carried her IV and took her outside to sit under the tree like we had everyday that week. I rubbed her and told her about my day, sang her some doggie songs and just acted like nothing was wrong. After 2000.00 and a trip to Blacksburg to a specialty hospital Eubus survived!!!!! To this day the vets credit my daily visits as part of her recovery...so this birthday is indeed a very special one.
Chase (fondly known as Eubus because she'll wag her tail so hard her body looks like the letter U) is the first dog that I ever solely owned. She's outlasted 2 husbands and been there through my tears and grief of separation. I forgive her for eating the Thanksgiving pie one year and 4 dozen Christmas cookies the next. Her favorite time of the day now is morning and 4:30 pm .... her eating times. She has the most beautiful dalmatian smile that you ever did see, and she gives me one every day when I get home from work.....after she finishes running around the back yard with the ball in her mouth.
She's taught me what unconditional love is all about and has always been there with her puppy kisses whenever I needed them most. She's "protected" me from the mailman everyday of her life by barking madly when he delivers the mail...causing him to turn and walk away real fast. She keeps me warm at night by snuggling right up against me, and is up and ready to go as soon as the alarm goes off. She's been my best friend and confidant, there when I thought the world had abandoned me.
There's a new collar, 2 meat filled bones (one for Molly), a birthday "cake", and party hats waiting for her big party this evening. Later on I'll pop some popcorn and share the bag with her. Happy 10th birthday Eubus....may we celebrate many, many more."
Unfortunately we would have Chase in our lives for a little over a year from that letter. On August 17, 2001 Chase lost her battle with Chronic Active Hepatitis. We helped her along her path, she left this world in her own home surrounded by those who loved her so very much. This site is to help other pet owners who are dealing with this awful disease...
